DMEM Low Glucose culture medium

  • At Asagen Biotechnology Company, DMEM is available in high and low glucose formats with glutamax (GlutaMAX TM) or with L-glutamine.

DMEM is the most suitable medium for many phenotypes of adherent cells among defined media for cell and tissue culture, which was first proposed by Harry Eagle. DMEM is the basic culture medium for the growth of many cells such as primary fibroblasts, nerve cells, glial cells, muscle cells and cancer cells. This culture medium is the same as the basic culture medium of MEM, which consists of a set of amino acids, vitamins, mineral salts, glucose and serum as a source of growth and hormones. The concentration of glucose in the culture media ranges from 5.5 μM to 25 μM. In addition to nutrients, this medium also helps to maintain pH and osmolality due to the presence of red phenol, and its pH is around 4.7.

The original formulation of DMEM contains 1000 mg/L of glucose (DMEM Low Glucose) and was initially used for the culture of mouse embryo cells. The use of DMEM with high glucose (DMEM High Glucose), which contains 4500 mg/L of glucose, shows optimal cell growth for some cell lines.

By using Glutamax in cell culture medium, the growth and survival of cells is improved. Glutamax contains the stable form of L-glutamine, the dipeptide L-alanyl-L-glutamine, which unlike L-glutamine, is stable in the culture medium. Glutamax increases the stability of the environment, minimizes toxicity and optimizes cell growth.
